A Woman’s Worth is Now Legacy in the Making

…And we’re back.

Ten years ago, I wrote my last blog post for A Woman’s Worth. I swapped my writing for a new, demanding job, and had no energy to deliver the witty blog posts that aimed a Black feminist lens at popular culture.

I’ve finally returned to writing—this time on Substack, a newsletter platform that allows people to receive my writing in their inboxes or on the platform.

My newsletter, Legacy in the Making, is dedicated to celebrating Black textile arts and traditions, like the Mardi Gras Indian beadwork, Gullah Geechee rag rug, and improvisational quilting. It’s my way of saving recipes: honoring our traditions while discussing how they relate to pop culture, politics, and our current realities.

This isn’t just about sewing, fabric, or craft. It’s about memory, culture, and the stories carried through the items and art we create with our hands.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Reflections on Black American and diaspora textile history and traditions, and how they connect to our present-day realities
  • Discussions on creativity as a form of advocacy
  • A journey of learning, documenting, and sewing in real time

Topics will range from the quilts our grandmothers use to make, to our favorite Black designers at the Met Gala, to the ways in which consumption habits affect our traditions and memories.

My goal is simple: to help keep our textile arts and traditions visible, valued, and alive.
